PALMER AND JONES TAKE OUT THE NORTHLAND SQUASH OPEN TITLES

The Angus.kiwi sponsored Northland Squash Open was held at the Whangarei Squash Club over the weekend with around 100 players in attendance.

Players came from clubs across Northland as well as from other provinces, some as far away as Southland.

The Tournament started on Thursday night and ended on Sunday afternoon where the winners were decided.

The 2015 Northland Open Men’s title was won by Luke Jones (Central). Luke is currently the number 1 ranked junior boy in New Zealand. Luke played Educare Northland Talent Hub Rep Finn Trimble in the final after Finn had upset his older brother Max in the semifinal the day before winning a closely fought battle 12-10 in the 5th set.

Luke won the final in 3 sets with Finn putting up a great fight.

3rd and 4th places were taken out by Tyler Ranger (BOP) and Max Trimble  (now in Hamilton).

The 2015 Northland Open Women’s title was won by Abbie Palmer (Auckland) who was too strong for Northland’s Sacha Pou Tito in the final, taking the match in 3 sets.

Abbie who lives in Waipu but plays her squash for Auckland has been named in the NZ Junior Girls team to play in the World Junior Squash Champs in Eindhoven, Netherlands at the end of this month.

The 3rd and 4th place in the Women’s Open Division was played out between Educare Northland Talent Hub Reps Zoe Dykzeul and MacKenzie Johnson. Zoe took the 3rd placing with a 5 set win over MacKenzie.

Other winners in the divisions below included Whangarei’s  Shayden Toka and Iyra Stewart who both took out the Division 1 titles.

Kerry Pellegrom from Manaia was the Division 2 winner along with Whangarei’s John Edwards who won a huge 5 set battle against Mid Western’s Issac Van Praag.

Division 3 winners were two junior players Daniel Clay from Kaitaia and Ocean Shadbolt from Maungaturoto. The Mens Division 4 was won by Rhyce Brittain-Clark from Kamo with fellow club member Shane Hohaia taking out the 5th Division.

Craig Gurr from Mid Western won the Mens 6th Division while the Mixed Division was won by Toni Wright from Kamo.

The Junior Division was won by Maddie Jameson from the Manaia Squash Club.

Rochelle Bekker won the $100 Angus player series spot prize while Max Trimble was the lucky winner of the $500 Angus sponsored cash prize.
