Mangakahia Open Tournament Results

The McCoy & Thomas Sports Mangakahia Open Squash Tournament was held over the weekend at the Mangakahia Squash Club at Poroti. The event, being in the angus.sport Northland Player series, attracted 58 entries in total, with a large contingent travelling from Manaia, several from Kamo and Whangarei and a few from Mid-Western and further afield. The squash tournament was held at the Mangakahia Community Sports and Recreation Centre which also had their rugby club holding the annual “Club Day” meaning there was junior and senior rugby on the park all day on Saturday. This made the sports complex a very busy and active place to be with plenty of sporting activity to watch and support. Thankfully the forecast rain had passed over the night before, leaving a lovely, sunny day in its wake.
The squash action was both friendly and ferocious, as many matches went to five sets. There were some close contests in most divisions with a few surprises along the way. All results have been recorded on the iSquash grading list. In the top divisions, Sacha Pou-Tito featured twice on finals day, winning the ladies comfortably, but not able to quite have things her way in the Mixed Open when she succumbed to top seed Ryan Chestnut in four sets. Olivia Brookland had a strong tournament, defeating Fiona Moselen in an earlier round to finish runner-up to Pou-Tito in the top ladies division.
