The C Grade Squash National Championships will be held at the Whangarei Squash Club this week from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 September.

The C Grade Squash National Championships will be held at the Whangarei Squash Club this week from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 September.

This club team competition will see 20 teams (10 men, 10 ladies) of 7 players plus managers, coaches and supporters from all over the country,  who have defeated their region’s best club teams to gain entry to the National SuperChamps.

Two Whangarei Squash club teams have qualified for this tournament at their home club – the Whangarei Ladies who automatically qualified and the Whangarei Mens  who did it the hard way by having to beat 3 other Northland club teams: Dargaville, Wellsford and Mangakahia.   While their victories against Dargaville and Wellsford were convincing, it was a nail biter in the final against a strong Mangakahia team with 4 of the 5 matches going to five sets to take the win 3-2.

The Whangarei Mens C Grade team will be aiming to defend the C Grade Superchamps title they won in 2020, and as the national competition was not held last year, they are the defending champions.

Only one player, Ben Sweeny, remains from the victorious 2020 team with most of the other players having moved up into B Grade.

The Whangarei Men’s team also includes the young Laing brothers, Josh, the No 1 player in the team has recently returned from Australia where he was part of the NZ Secondary Schools Team and part of the victorious Whangarei Boys High Secondary schools team.  Younger brother Zac is the current North & South Island Under 13 Champion.  Master’s player Hongi Laing will play at No 3 in the team, and only just last weekend he won another NZ Masters Championship title in the 70+ age division.  Dayley Johnson, Ari Welsh and Allan Inglis make up the men’s team who are seeded 6th.

The Whangarei Ladies team is also a good mix of youth and experience and includes 3 young junior players in Jordyn Chapman, Liv and Hayley Rhodes, all part of the Whangarei Girls High team who came 3rd at the recent Secondary Schools Nationals.  Penny Froggatt, Nicola Pryor, Delwyn Houlihan and Tia Saunders make up the team who are seeded 9th.

The tournament commences on Wednesday afternoon with the finals being played on Saturday afternoon.
